How I Made...
Pedo Bear's Shoes!
Tutorial type: Confirmed.
A costume's shoes need to be strong, durable, comfortable and yet look accurate to the cosplay. I usually go to the Thrift Store and buy a pair of nice, comfortable worn in shoes (if you can, always go after the sneakers!), then I modify them to fit the costume.
Permanent shoe covers are one of the best ways of modifying shoes to fit your outfit. Permanent means that they are permanently attached and can not be removed afterwards.
The following tutorial a pretty generic way of creating shoe covers using FURRY material (the method for doing this with non-furry fabric is slightly different). Shoe covers will make you very happy, so I highly suggest you learn how to make them.
Materials I used:
- Packing tape
- Scissors
- Exacto Knife
- Pedo Pelt (brown furry fabric)
- Pair of old Nike shoes
- Upolstery needle
- Thick nylon thread
- Pliers
- Marker
- High temp hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
Procedure!
Step 1: If the shoe you are using is a slip on, then skip this step. If your shoe has a tongue or laces or is adjustable in size, then keep reading. Remove the laces, buckles or straps. Put the shoe on and determine the minimum size it has to be in order for your foot to just gently slide in and out with little force. Use the hot glue gun to quickly glue the tongue or straps in that position. Slide your foot out and now use the upholstery needle and thick nylon thread to sew the tongue or straps in place. Use pliers if you have trouble pushing the needle through the shoe material.
Step 2: Cover the shoe in several layers of packing tape. Try to follow the contours of the shoe as best as possible. The better you follow them, the more accurate the pattern will be. Build the ankle part at least 5 cm up or as high as you want using the packing tape.
Step 3: Use the scissors or exacto knife to cut the packing tape off the shoe. It will peel right off.
Step 4: Use the scissors to cut the packing tape skin into as large as possible pieces that lay FLAT. If a piece does not lay flat, then cut it so that it does. Make sure to number/label/mark/whatever your pieces as you cut them so that you know which piece goes to what piece. Do NOT forget to do this or else you will not be able to reconstruct the shape later.
Step 5: Place the tape pieces on the furry material. They should stick slightly to the fabric. Now cut around them leaving about 1 cm of seem allowance. Number or lable the pieces of fur as you are cutting them out.
Step 6: Start with the toe area and work your way to the back of the heel. Use the hot glue to attach the furry pieces onto the shoe.
Step 7: If there are bald spots, use some of the fluff that has fallen off of the project so far (trust me, there will be plenty all over everything by now... floating around you, on your work area, in your clothes, pfft, pfft... *spits* In your mouth... ) and glue it into the bald area. If you can't find enough fur (you're lying! pfft, pfft... Gods, I think it's in my lungs now!) then just use your scissors and cut some off of a scrap piece of fur until you have yourself a nice ball of fluff. Put a dab of hot glue on the bald area and then press the ball of fluff into it. Let it dry and then brush off the excess.
Step 7: Aaaaaand! I'll finish this tutorial after lunch later today... Pfft.
