Whoa so not sure if this is where this goes...but I have a question with weaponry!
So I'm actually trying to make a huuuuge anchor =D and here's the thing I have it pretty much done I just don't know how to make the top layer smooth like what to put over it. So far it's made mainly or styrofoam and I'm at a bit of a loss. Then I saw your weapons and was sooo amazed if it's not like a trade secret or anything, what in the world did you guys make or even just finish your weapons with to make then so smooth looking?
Thank for the time even if you can't answer the question! ^^

Ah, sorry for taking so long to answer. I /just/ now saw this question.
Well, I used a combination of several things to finish our props.
Like for Testament's scythe, I used heat formed plastic (called Wonderflex) to "wrap" it first. Then, I used a mixture of paints, wood glues, plaster and polyurethane to coat it and then sand it smooth. In all honesty, we were just experimenting with it. I used straight polyurethane and pray on lacquer to seal it and give it that shiny look.
For the anchor, because you used Styrofoam, you'll want to stay away from any heat needing materials (like heat formed plastic) and because of it's size, you'll want to use really light materials, so stay away from Bondo and plaster.
In all honesty, I highly suggest covering the anchor with paper mache. It's very light, and extremely strong, especially if you use wood glue in the paper mache. You can also sand the paper mache to get rid of "bumps" and such. Just wet the sanded part and smooth it down again when you're done sanding it.
To make the anchor "smooth," coat it in a mixture of "outdoor" paint (like from the big gallon buckets they use to paint houses with - that kind of paint and use black paint to go with the anchor) mixed with wood glue and just a little bit of plaster (the plaster works as a thickening agent and makes the whole thing easy to sand once it drys). The wood glue keeps the plaster from being fragile and the paint is mostly filler to help the whole thing go on smoothly. Paint this mixture on and let it dry completely. Now sand it smooth. You should be able to get a china doll smoothness when you're done. Feel free to re-paint the mixture where it needs it and re-sand.
Now spray paint the anchor with black, gray, white, etc to get cool texture looking effects. Let it dry at least a few days before spraying on the sealant.
Once you're done, I suggest either spray on laquer, gloss, or polyurethane (these are sealants and protect your anchor from being scratched, broken, damaged, and keep the paint job looking good forever). In all honesty, they all work about the same and give about the same results. I like lacquer and water based polyurethane best so I usually do a coat of each. Let it dry in a dust-free area for two weeks to achieve a FULL cure. Handling it before the end of two weeks can leave finger prints in the finish or mess-up the paint job.
Hope this helps. Feel free to ask anything else.

Wow thanks so much I was going to try gesso and foam but this sounds more along the lines of being able to work. Thank youuuu~ This doesn't sound hard and I already have most of that from other props so yey! I'm glad to get instructions from someone who's tried something like this before too. Thank you so much! I'll post a picture when I'm done ^^ This is actually what I have right now I can't wait to get back and start working on it again. Thank you you have no idea how much help this is! ^^ I'm such a big fan of your cosplays! ^.^
